Dara Torres is a U.S. olympic swimmer who won silver in Bejing at the age of 41. I forget if it was the 50 or the 100 free, but it was a *very* close race for the gold.
edit: Surprisingly, c_b and I agree on the pronunciation of Norfolk.
As long as a Starbucks is open somewhere in the New Dominion, it's not an emergency and the left-over pizza can go to the teenage boy with the hollow leg.
I initially heard about Kiva from a guy who worked for a different microloan nonprofit in DC. It's encouraging to see the # of repaid loans vs. the # of defaulted loans. The overwhelming majority of these folks make good, which is more than the average American can say.
c_b, I think all those cupcakes to the head have addled your brains. Celery is the best, the brightest, the most perfect way to convey soft Laughing Cow cheeses to the mouth.
Yes, but he ate two bags of popcorn a day. I'd ahve problems if I slathered my body in Vaseline morning and night, or ate a pound of carrots at every meal. Everything in moderation. Seriously!
On a side note: I've finally figured out why turkey bacon exists. It is kosher. For years, I thought it was because turkey was healthier than pork. Since bacon is usually fried, I couldn't see why you'd care. I know you're all thinking, "duh jen", but this was one of moments when the world suddenly made sense. Clearly, I need my horizons broadened.
Funny thing, I've been having nightmares about giving birth to 13-year olds. (Okay, in my dream it was a 9-year old.) Either way, it's pretty uncomfortable.
c_b et al: What possible problem can you have with PBF??? It's sweet and fatty and salty and I was never allowed to eat it as a child, which always makes things taste better. (c_b, clarification would help. Which two combinations are worthy of a call to cps?)
bilby, we don't need a random list feature. You just type in http://wordie.org/lists/ and add a jumble of numbers after that. It's pretty entertaining. :)
Sir? Private jennarenn reporting with some intelligence of an abandoned open list. weirdpunk seems to have abandoned this over a month ago. Permission to investigate?
Oh, a friend actually gave me those bandages for Christmas! They come with a tiny plastic pig. See my comments on bacon and fried goodness for further illumination.
English is a language of loanwords. That's why we have several names for everything (dresser v. chest of drawers), and so many spelling quirks. I would have said that sari was a loanword, while ennui was fully English by now. Each to his own.
Private jennarenn, reporting for duty. We may have found our next target. An off-duty Wordie left a list of ten "surreal idioms" just sitting there. Permission to investigate?
Well, mixhere, first you get some words. Then you ask them to line up. They're going to push and shove, and everybody, and I do mean EVERYBODY, will want to be first. Once you marshal the troups into some sort of order, you drop them one at a time into the little box and click add. Suddenly, you have a list.
sightsitecite, you have won the fabulous username award! You also created the *very first* open list. Must have been quite a day. Wish I'd been there. :)
I was thinking about pairs of words where one is a misspelling of another. The mistake connotes some additional meaning that is lost when the word is spoken. For example, fstr is an abbreviation of faster, but there's no way to read it.
Ha! I kept reading this word as Monday, and then looking at the weirnet definition, then looking back at the word, misreading it again, then back at the definition....
Here's a question: how do we know when a list has been added? What happens if some new wordie stumbles across a classic from ages past and nominates it for '08? Do we care?
dc: Good call on the jazz hands. It would have never crossed my consciousness, but they really do have an expiration date, and it's after approximately three repetitions.
dc: I wish I could say that I was a fan of mushy foods, such as porridge, oatmeal, cream of wheat, etc., but it is not so. Much like Sunny Baudelaire, I prefer my breakfast foods on the crunchy side.
b: I can whistle, rock, knit, play *with* crickets, eat apples, and tell tall tales. Do I pass???
Oh, I know it's not surprising. I just like to think of a time when there was only one list. My new hobby is to type in http://wordie.org/lists/ and then put a random number at the end. I was just wondering if there was some obscure test list out there, floating in the blue.
edit: I currently working on a s l o w computer. Quadruple commenting will not continue. My apologies!
Falafel sounds like it may qualify on the "fried" side of things, but I'm still unconvinced about the "goodness" factor, particularly since I don't care for pepper. I'll investigate and get back to you.
P.S. Funnel cakes are right up there with bacon. Heaven forbid I ever have to choose.
Nothing is better than a snorifice captured on film. Finally, the noisy offender has no recourse but to buy you doughnuts, if only to help you gain enough weight to join them in their nocturnal chorus.
Sorry bilby, that was an American reference. Click and Clack are two car mechanics who have a humorous radio show where people call in with car problems and end up getting made fun of. I know that I've seen a few Car Talk lists on this site....
In college, I had a male acquaintance whole swore up and down that he could get a "milky fluid" to drain from his nipples with about 20 minutes of massaging the area. I never bothered to verify his claim.
As someone whose Wordie time is severely limited between September and June, there are times when I'd appreciate a way to filter comments. Personally, I simply can't keep up anymore. I love that you guys are enjoying yourselves, but I do miss being in the thick of things. :) Jen
This is one of the few lists that would actually be better in real life. :) (Not meant as a diss on yo' list.)
Seriously, can you imagine some of the real-life items that lists represent just piled on top of each other? Then again, maybe you can't. I tend to find my own fun.
The problem is that pronk is the first word that I free-associate with stot. While I am thrilled that both words made it on the list, I see an endless loop up ahead. Somebody else needs to take the reigns.
What I love is those tubs of spreadable port wine cheese. Slightly sketch; perfectlty wonderful. (I also have a good recipie that calls for Velveeta, but I never know what to do with the rest of the brick.)
I *have* had the chocolate Twizzlers, and I admit that they confused me. They have the texture of licorice and the flavor of chocolate. Now if you found something with the opposite features, I could be a fan.
I have 999 words. I'd like to add another couple of lists, but I find myself reluctant to get into the quadruple digits. Maybe I can find something to prune first....
So...what would you call a band that performs in a women's restroom? It wasn't great music, but the venue was memorable. It's also the only event I've ever attended that was broken up by the police. :)
Our family's favorite Mr. Ed episode was the one where he's driving a van. You see this hoof step on the gas, which just sent us into fits of giggles. When Ed (inevitably) gets pulled over, he's wearing goggles, a scarf, and a driving cap. Brilliant show.
I coached a summer league team for five years and always wanted to get my kids these really cool trophies. If you scroll down you'll see that the swimmer is actually horizontal. They were out of our price range, but the team got me one as a going-away present. :)

English is a language of loanwords. That's why we have several names for everything (dresser v. chest of drawers), and so many spelling quirks. I would have said that sari was a loanword, while ennui was fully English by now. Each to his own.
