  • Wow, this a real place? There's a street here in Albuquerque with this name and I always figured it was some sort of madeupical joke name. I'm guessing it's pronounced "brin mauer"?

  • More marr, at least for me. It is also one of the seven sisters.

  • There's a Bryn Mawr Street in Albuquerque? Wow. Yes, as trivet pointed out, it's the town where Bryn Mawr College is located, along a fancy stretch of real estate that's locally called "the Main Line." Around here it's pronounced "Brin Marr." Is your street's name pronounced differently?

  • Bryn Mawr doesn't have a Haverford Boulevard next to it in Albuquerque though. The closest streets are Richmond and Lafayette. I never thought of Bryn Mawr being in the South.

    Bryn Mawr means "high hill"

What good is that in the Rocky Mountains???

    September 19, 2007

  • No, it's definitely not your typical Southern town, that's for sure. :-)

  • Interesting, interesting. I'm not sure how the street is pronounced here in ABQ, I've only seen the sign for the street (it's not a major road) and speculated about how one might say that. I'm curious, fbharjo, are you familiar with Albuquerque or did you just look that up online? I wouldn't describe New Mexico as the South -- that's a label reserved for states like Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, and the like. Out here we prefer the term Southwest. ;-)

Funny, in Florida, where I grew up, that's not the South either. Because the state is filled with retired yankees, Floridians have to drive north to get to the South.

    September 19, 2007

  • Fbharjo may have been referring to Richmond and Lafayette as Southern, uselessness. Least that's how I took it. :-)

    September 19, 2007

  • Oh, actually the theme for street names in that part of town is college names, so I guess it makes sense. Nearby is the University of New Mexico, surrounded by roads like Dartmouth Dr., Harvard Dr., and Yale Blvd. It's all becoming clear now! ;-)

  • I lived on Bryn Mawr NE in Albuquerque, also on Richmond both NE & SE in Albuquerque, and on Amherst SE in Albuquerque, and attended some classes at Bryn Mawr College while attending Haverford College in PA. And then there's Swarthmore.... but that is a whole other story.

    September 20, 2007

  • Holy cow, you actually LIVED on that road? In Albuquerque? I can't quite wrap my head around what an outrageous coinkydink that is. Of all the weird names for all the minor streets in all the not-quite-popular cities in the world, I happened to mention the very one that you, a perfect stranger, lived on? Holy cow.

    September 20, 2007

  • Not to mention attending two colleges (or three) that were smack down the road from the one I attended! A double coinkydink. :-)

    September 20, 2007

  • There is a town in south Wales where my grandfather was born called Brynmawr or Bryn-mawr. It means "big hill."

  • When I was a child, I would ask for my parents' permission to get my ears pierced. They would say, "Only when you've been accepted to a Seven Sisters college." I had no idea what that meant, but the example was always that my father's grandmother had attended Bryn Mawr.

I wouldn't have had to actually graduate, but I never even applied--so I'm still stuck wearing clip-ons.
