  • In coinmaking, the collar is an edge device, sometimes called a collar die, that surrounds the lower die. Technically, "open" and "closed" collars are both types of closed collars. The opposite is a segmented collar, a die made of several parts that come together during striking and then spring apart afterward to allow the ejection of the coin without shearing off the new edge device (which would happen in a standard closed collar). The closed collar creates reeding or a smooth, plain edge; the segmented collar is used to create edge designs.
