Well, for one, I knew the page was served as UTF-8, and I also know that ISO-8859-1 latin-1 served as UTF-8 makes accented characters look like question marks.

The little question marks you may have seen in place of accented characters a few weeks back were caused by a lovely mix-up of utf-8 and latin-1 inside my databases.
