• noun In the Philippine Islands, Guam, and on the west coast of Mexico, the orangeberry, Triphasia trifoliata, a shrub with glossy, dark-green, trifoliate leaves, white flowers with the fragrance of hyacinth, and globular berries of an orange-scarlet color filled with a somewhat gummy, bitter-sweet pulp, which has the flavor of curaçao liqueur. The plants send up many shoots from the root and form dense thickets if undisturbed. They are much used for hedges, and from the fruit marmalade and jelly are made, of an orange-like flavor, but having a constipating effect if eaten in any quantity. Also called limoncito de China and lemoncito.
