Not clear where this phrase is going, but to follow the thread of conversation: Australians are indeed enjoying an aspirational spate of obesity it would seem. But in my experience it is still possible to go to most restaurants here and receive a normal-sized serving that can more or less be finished by the diner while he or she is there. When in the States I was appalled by the amount of food that was wasted because I could rarely finish more than half of what was served to me.

Interesting observation frindley. That's why the doggie bag industry is so prosperous here in the US.
It's great to pay for dinner in a restaurant & have enough left over for the next day's lunch & dinner. Takes the economic sting out of dining out.
We do have a penchant for bigness here in the US that is seriously straining the earth's resources.

Frindley, many of us in the United States are also appalled by the amount of food that's wasted at restaurants. I continually wonder where marketers came up with the idea that we all want to eat a week's worth of food at one sitting.
Then again, it does seem to be helping the doggie bag industry, as palooka points out. ;-)

Well, I guess serving size helps justify a certain price point or gives the impression of better value or something. I wouldn't have minded so much, except I could never face eating the contents of the doggie bag the next day, so it really was a waste. Whereas some of my friends had the two-meals-for-the-price-of-one thing down to a fine art.

That's a fact. It truly is a waste if you can't bear eating leftovers. I'm lucky to be one of those who actually enjoys them (usually).

Leftover cheese fries from Outback, though I've never ordered them, seem like something that would not make a good leftover meal. On the other hand, one of those enormous gigundo bowls of pasta-fatsauce-grilled chicken-strips stuff that's usually only $8.99 or so does make an excellent lunch next day. And sometimes an excellent dinner next day also.
Sushi is also not good as a leftover. Not advisable.

There are certain rules concerning doggie bag use by the way. For instance it's in bad taste to:
1. Ask your fellow diners if you can put their leftovers in your bag
2. Ask the waiter if the kitchen has any excess food you can put in your bag.
3. Include silverware, plates, glasses, salt & pepper shakers, etc in your bag.
4. Include parts of the restaurant's wiring, plumbing, or wall decorations in your bag.
5. Amble about the restaurant attempting to sell leftover items in your bag to the other diners.
Etc. I imagine you all have other rules to follow concerning doggy bag usage.

If it wasn't for leftovers, I'd only eat two or three times a week reesetee. Leftovers are an essential food group.
