From Old English mǣġþ ("family group, clan, tribe, generation, stock, race, people"), from Proto-Germanic *mēgaz (“kin”). Cognate with Middle Dutch maech, Dutch maag, Old High German māg, Gothic 𐌼𐌴𐌲𐍃 ("son-in-law"), equivalent to maeg +‎ -th.
