  • A darling city in Virginia with a very odd shape. Originally, and possibly apocryphally, named for Captain Christopher Newport (who, despite the expensive two-armed statue erected in his honor at Christopher Newport University, had only one arm), who frequently brought supplies, settlers, and yes, news to the colony during its earliest years.

    Which predate Plymouth, thankyouverymuch. :)

  • How would you describe the odd shape?

  • I hope it's not shaped like an arm.

  • Actually... it is shaped rather like an arm. How odd.

How would I describe the weird shape, bilby? It's on a peninsula, only it's lengthwise up the shore of a river. At its "back" is another weirdly-shaped city, Hampton--which follows the other river. So when you're driving on the Interstate, which of course follows the peninsula, you're crossing the same city lines over and over again. The cities were built in the 17th and 18th centuries--when the real highway was the waterways. So they follow the riverbanks, not the peninsula.
