Perhaps this is why England remained so bitterly divided for so long, and vulnerable to sustained regional invasion/occupation - because they didn't initially have a hill of belief to bring them together and the geography was obviously much larger too, coupled with the fact that the majority of the population was increasingly non-celtic, leading to a degree of repression of the intitial 'idigenous' culture, seemingly tied in with the eventual rejection of Columban Christianity, including by the religious group Bede belonged to.
