From Middle English noteful, notful ("useful"), from note ("use, need"), from Old English notu ("use, enjoyment"), from Proto-Germanic *nutō, *nutjō, *nutan (“use, enjoyment”), from Proto-Indo-European *neud- (“to acquire, make use of”) + ful, equivalent to note + -ful. Related to Old English nēotan ("to use, enjoy"), Old English nyttian ("to make use of, utilize"), Old English nytlīċ ("useful, profitable, beneficial").
