- noun A sewing-machine adapted to making the long stitches used in overseaming, eyeletting, serging, and in many kinds of fancy stitching. It employs a vibrating needle controlled by an adjustable cam that limits the traverse of the needle and hence the length of the stitch. Also called, from the motion of the needle, a zigzag machine.
