• noun A small tree, the American hornbeam, Carpinus Caroliniana: so named from its growing in wet ground, and from its resemblance, especially m its bark, to the beech. Also called blue-beech.
• noun Im properly, the sycamore, or American plane-tree, Platanus occidentalis, growing on low grounds, and having reddish wood like that of the beech.
