Purchased some yardlong beans from the "Chun Ching" grocery in my town this week. One has to coil/fold them in order to fit them in the standard plastic produce bag.

My beans came up short, alas, by several long inches. However, I have a fascicle of longleaf pine needles that are just over 26 inches long - which may be longer than the published record, though I haven't researched it fully. As for the beans, I would imagine that picking the beans "short" is good because they'd be more tender for the cooking. Fisherman exaggerate the length of their catches as a rule.... perhaps bean growers and namers do so too?
