As the game is played in recent times, the players strive to shove the counters beyond a certain line and as near the end of the table as possible, without shoving them entirely off. Formerly also shoveboard, and (because often played with silver pieces), shove-groat, slide-groat, shovel-penny, or shove-halfpenny'>shove-halfpenny."
