Aegolius

The saw-whet owl (Aegolius acadicus), a species of special concern in North Carolina, often roosts during the day in red spruce trees of 66i and nests in cavity trees such as yellow birch or in nest boxes set out for flying squirrels.

Owl species considered rare include: Bubo bubo, Strix nebulosa, Strix uralensis, Asio otus, Sumia ulula, Glaucidium passerinum and Aegolius funereus.

Some 13 of these are listed including lesser kestrel Falco naumanni (VU), Chinese grouse Bonasa sewerzovi (VU), Chinese monal Lophophorus lhuysii (VU), blue-eared pheasant Crossoptilon auritum, Sichuan jay Perisoreus imternigrans (VU), snowy-cheeked laughingthrush Garrulax sukatschewi (VU), rufus-headed robin Luscinia ruficeps (VU) and a subspecies of Tengmalm's owl Aegolius funereus beickianus which is endemic to the region.

Common taiga birds are hazel grouse (Getrastes bonasia), capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus and T. parvirostris), the great grey owl (Strix nebulosa), hawk owl (Surnia ulula) and boreal owl (Aegolius funereus), the black woodpecker (Dryocopus martius), northern three-toed woodpecker (Picoides tridactylus), Siberian jay (Perisoreus infaustus) and the nutcracker (Nucifraga caryocatactes).
