Ourebia

Within the St. Floris region, the most abundant large mammals seem to be kob Kobus kob, hartebeest Alcelaphus buselaphus and grey duiker Sylvicapra grimmia, with other fairly abundant ungulates including waterbuck Kobus ellipsiprymnus, oribi Ourebia ourebi, topi Damaliscus lunatus, reedbuck Redunca redunca, roan antelope Hippotragus equines and giant eland Taurotragus derbianus; also buffalo Syncerus caffer, warthog Phacochoerus aethiopicus and hippopotamus Hippopotamus amphibius.

Wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus) and oribi (Ourebia ourebi) also frequent extensive floodplains and grasslands, although the latter favor less waterlogged areas such as termitaries, where herbs and woody growth provide food and cover.

Oribi (Ourebia oribi) are also found within the ecoregion.

Large populations of several antelopes are present and include an estimated population of 1,500-2,000 of the endemic grey rhebok Pelea capreolus, 1,000 reedbuck Redunca arundinum, and approximately 2,000 eland Taurotragus oryx; also bushbuck Tragelaphus scriptus, blue duiker Cephalophus monticola, klipspringer Oreotragus oreotragus and oribi Ourebia ourebi.

Three lakes are also found in this park, providing habitat for a variety of waterbirds as well as antelope species with a preference for marshy or open, grassy habitat such as sitatunga, oribi (Ourebia ourebi), waterbuck, tsessebe, and lechwe (Kobus leche).

Oribi (Ourebia ourebi) favor the less waterlogged areas on extensive floodplains such as the Zambezi delta, where termitaries, herbs and woody growth provide cover and supplement their diet.

Among these are the brown hyena (Hyaena brunnea), African civet (Civettictis civetta), leopard (Panthera pardus), sable (Hippotragus niger), pangolin (Manis temminckii), honey badger (Mellivora capensis), striped weasel (Poecilogale albinucha), aardwolf (Proteles cristatus), oribi (Ourebia ourebi), and mountain zebra (Equus zebra hartmannae).

Some of the largest populations of ungulates in southern Africa are found within the ecoregion, including eland (Taurotragus oryx), reedbuck (Redunca arundinum), mountain reedbuck (Redunca fulvorufula), grey rhebok (Pelea capreolus), black wildebeest (Connochaetes gnou) and a small population of oribi (Ourebia ourebi).

Wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus) are mostly found in areas of short grass close to permanent waters, while Bohor’s reedbuck (Redunca redunca) and oribi (Ourebia ourebi) prefer unstable grasslands that are maintained by flooding, fires, drought or heavy grazing.
