The cloud forest supports a wide diversity of fauna with such notable species as turkey vulture Cathartes aura, Andean guan Penelope montagnii, scarlet-fronted parakeet Aratinga wagleri, lyre-tailed nightjar Uropsalis lyra, marvellous spatuletail Loddigesia mirabilis (VU), cock-of-the-rock Rupicola peruviana, carbonated flower-piercer Diglossa carbonaria and hepatic tanager Piranga flava (Mittermeier, de Macedo and Luscombe, 1975).

The CSNR is known to contain more than 400 of Suriname's known bird species, including Scarlet, Red-and-Green and Blue-and-Gold Macaws, (Ara macao, Ara chloroptera, Ara ararauna); Great Tinamou (Tinamus major), Black Curassow (Crax alector) the Guianan Cock-of-the-Rock (Rupicola rupicola) and the Harpy Eagle.

The northern section of the CSNR is known globally as one of the best places to see Red and Green Macaws (Ara chloroptera) and the Guianan Cock-of-the-Rock (Rupicola rupicola).

Notable other species include condor Vultur gryphus, seen particularly around the mountain area of Altar, Cubillin and Quilimas, cock of the rock Rupicola peruviana ecuatorialis, in substantial populations in inaccessible upper forest areas of the eastern Andean slopes, giant humming bird Patagona gigas, torrent duck Marganetta armata, king vulture Sarcoramphus papa and swallow-tailed kite Elanoides porficatus.

This ecoregion has at least four species of endemic birds like the Gallito de las rocas (Rupicola peruviana) and endemic species of butterflies of the genera Dismopha, Callithea, Paridos, Morpho.

Avian richness and diversity are high, and shares affinites with the Guyana Highlands and northern Andes (cock of the rock Rupicola rupicola) as well as the Amazonian lowlands (hoatzin Opisthocomus hoazin).

But it is a fact, at least exceptional to this theory, that the "Cock of the Rock" (Rupicola) on the western side of the Andes (Esmeraldas) is of a richer, deeper color than the same species on the eastern slope (Napo).

Notable among the endangered species are the mono choro cola amarilla (Lagotryx flavicauda), jaguar (Panthera onca), tigrillo (Leopardus pardallis), oso de anteojos (Tremarctos ornatus), nutria (Lutra longicaudis), gato silvestre (Oncifelis colocolo), gallito de las rocas (Rupicola peruviana) and quina (Cinchona sp.)
