sionnach commented on the word brahms's second symphony
Balm to my soul after an intermittently difficult week. So sue me, but when it comes to the symphonic repertory, I have a strong predilection for dead white male Europeans. And nobody does it better than Brahms.
That final movement - there's such a strong, comforting feeling of coming home.
(The rest of the concert - overture to "The Magic Flute", and an oboe concerto by Richard Strauss, was pretty comforting as well)

yarb commented on the word brahms's second symphony
I like dead white male European composers as much as the next guy - actually quite a bit more than him - but poor Brahms abides largely in my blind spot, especially his symphonies. I've never really considered why this is - perhaps I just haven't paid enough attention to him - but I've just put his 2nd on (LSO live with Haitink) and will report back.

I think it helps humanize him to know that, as a youth, he played piano in a whorehouse. Kind of dispels that image of the old gentleman with the bushy beard.
The second symphony is not as sublime as, say, the first and fourth symphonies, but it was a definite comfort last night. :-)
