A lexicon novel by Milorad Pavic, with male and female editions. Start reading where you choose among the entries, and see where you end up.

I *loved* this book, when I read it in the early '90s. I have a vague memory of hearing that Pavic, a Serb, had nationalist leanings, which upset me, but perhaps I'm wrong. The overall spirit of the book is humanistic and ecumenical. Can't find anything on the Interblag to confirm or deny, which makes me think there's nothing to it.

Wasn't the difference between the male and female editions just a single word?
Also, though I read this many years ago, I have absolutely no recollection of it. Nor do I know, for that matter, what a lexicon novel is.

Oh, I love this book, these books, Pavic is possibly my favorite writer in the world.
sionnach, the difference is a paragraph which changes everything. and by lexicon novel, it means that it is written in the form of a dictionary, as the title suggests - although it really more of an encyclopedia, I would say. like an epistolary novel is written in the form of letters, you know?
ahh ahh *flaphands* I just can't tell you how much I love Pavic.
