It would be easy to show by experiment that the slowness of combustion depends on the fact that in the atmosphere oxygen is mixed with a great mass of an inert gas, and the proportions have been so adjusted in the scheme of creation as generally to restrain the awakened energies of the fire-element within the narrow limits which man appoints; but when, through his misfortune or carelessness, it overrides these limits, and, from administering to man's wants, becomes the agent of his destruction, we are reminded in the awful conflagration by what a delicate tenure we hold our earthly possessions, and how small a change would be sufficient to involve all organized matter in a general conflagration.
