In my head, a microfarm was a plot of land with a footprint the size of a city terrace which was simultaneously blooming with flowers and vegetables, honking with geese, clucking with chickens and covered in trailing greenery and mulch, with someone driving a wheelbarrow through the plot, delivering hay to some minature cows while a small but sturdy windmill creaks overhead.

I defer to Wendy, as far as experience with microfarms goes, since I have never run any microfarm (or any farm for that matter) but I have participated in conducting feasibility studies for some ngos in rural areas of developing countries and read in reports from microfarms in Honduras and/or Nicaragua that most of them suffered from inaccessibility of markets, which limited their profits considerably, if they were far from urban centers or turist areas.

Having said that I probably should admit that a couple of months ago I was seriously tempted to buy a beautiful and well designed organic microfarm (2.5 acres) in the mountains of Honduras, but as a romantic nostalgia trip rather than a profitable activity - the farm was located in a cloud forest, near hot springs, had a cute circa 850 sf cabin, furnished and equipped with most modern conveniences, fabulous views of mountains on all sites, all raised beds with irrigation systems in place, producing fruit trees and so on and so on ... and all of it could probably be had for $40k (the owner wanted a bit more, but since the farm is still for sale ...).
