While noexec is only a weak defense (scripts could still be executed by calling the interpreter with the script as argument), it gives a little bit more protection and has no real downsizes.

In another thread, someone suggested using "user" in fstab but that defaults to noexec.

If it is a server that interacts with untrusted users, there should be no place those daemons can write to that is not mounted noexec.

The partition is mounted with the 'user' option, no 'noexec'.

PPS, If you find yourself making statements like "While noexec is only a weak defense, it gives a little bit more protection", you are probably not really talking about security, but instead about a warm fuzzy feeling.
