- noun In certain parts of England, as Yorkshire, a name for a goblin or a spectral creature, traditionally appearing as a dog, a sheep, or simply as a ‘ghost.’ The name is said to be due to the fact that the goblin was imagined to run with a soft sound of footsteps, by the side of persons walking at night.
