I commend Blomkamp for shooting what appeared to be hazy, low resolution imagery and essentially blurring many/most of the shots in his movie so that when he (rarely) focused clearly on a well rendered Prawn, they appeared to have the alleged 'photorealistic' look (thus visually tricking viewers into believing that the CGI is great).
