- noun A genus of motile bacteria. The cells are short or long, sometimes forming filaments; the flagella polar, varying from 1 to 10. The species are numerous, occurring mostly in soil and water. A few are pathogenic. P. campestris is the cause of the black rot of cabbage and other closely related plants. P. Hyacinthi causes a rot of hyacinth bulbs.
