The posterior tibial veins (vv. tibiales posteriores) accompany the posterior tibial artery, and are joined by the peroneal veins.

The anterior tibial veins (vv. tibiales anteriores) are the upward continuation of the venæ comitantes of the dorsalis pedis artery.

The most important local factors predisposing to flat-foot are weakness of those muscles which normally support the ankle and the tarsal arches, especially the tibiales; weakness of the ligaments of the foot; and softness of the tarsal bones.

Transplantation may also be performed to replace a muscle which is quite inactive and does not show any sign of recovery -- for example, the tibiales being paralysed, the peroneus longus may be implanted into the navicular or first metatarsal to act as an invertor of the foot.

There is also shortening of the muscles inserted into the tendo Achillis, and to a less extent of the tibiales anterior and posterior.

While in talipes equinis it is generally the only disturbing agent, in talipes varus and valgus it invariably increases and maintains the deformity, which the tibiales or peronei seem to originate.
