  • A large order of monocotyledonous plants, distinguished chiefly by the mealy endosperm, from which it has been called Farinosæ. In modern systems it is placed between the Arales and the Liliales, and embraces 11 families, of which the most important are the Xyridaceæ, Bromeliaceæ, Commelinaceæ, and Pontederiaceæ.
