Great list! Are you from, or living in, the great commonwealth? (Just curious. You don't have to answer, of course.)
I always liked Kiptopeke, Kecoughtan, Pulaski, Tappahannock, Arlington (it rolls off the tongue and yet feels like a bell ringing), and Front Royal. Ooh! And Pungo!

Pretty tough to beat Chincoteague and Assateague, either for tongue-tickling or for jaw-dropping natural beauty.

Yes, Santa Claus, there is a Virginia! With such beautiful names. My family, on my mother's side, comes from Danville (an OK, but fairly plain name) and, in Pittsylvania County, Chatham. Thanks for this list! My only suggestions would be Roanoake and Rappahannock.

Manassass, Toano, Staunton, and of course Shenandoah.
c_b, I am just a tiny little bit jealous that you got to Kiptopeke first. ;) Have you ever been in the autumn?

Just don't pronounce Staunton as "STAWN-ton," or you'll be shot as a Northerner. ;-)

I'm sorry to be a jerk, but I think it's Manassas and Roanoke.
People around here (around Toano) are divided on how to pronounce it. Some people say it "ToANNo," and some say "ToAHHno."
No, I've never actually been to Kiptopeke. Wait... have I? Maybe. It was in the spring though. If I was actually there.

Thanks for the suggestions! I added a few of them to the list. I actually considered Rappahannock for my original list, but as far as I can tell, it is a county and a river, but not a town. c_b, I did once live in southeastern Virginia after college. I was in Southampton County, the largest peanut-producing county in the U S of A. I think it benefits from the smaller land areas of Georgia counties though.

WOOOO!! Southampton! Home of the Peanuts, Pork, and Pine Festival! (Or something like that.) Wait... maybe I'm thinking of Smithfield.
Oops.
Well, Southampton always beats the crap out of us at H.S. football, so that's something anyway.
And Virginia peanuts really are the best.

c_b, I'm shocked! The Pork, Pine, and Peanut Festival is only a ferry away, over in Surry County. Certainly you visited the Surry House before its untimely demise.
A little background for you out-of-towners: Surry County can only support one restaurant. One of my favorite greasy spoons, the Surry House, shut down within a year of some fancy new restaurant opening up.

Personally, I was there for the pine. I worked for Union Camp.

Surry! Ah, duh!
You know, I kept cutting out those "free peanut soup!" coupons for Surry House and meaning to go over on the ferry and try it out, but I never did. (I've been to Surry though!) I was sad to find out it closed recently!
I have had peanut soup elsewhere though. And it seems like this discussion has moved toward peanuts...

And, of course, you have not lived until you have tried boiled peanuts.

The Surry House was where I first sampled peanut soup. They also had these amazing apple fritters that were simply *smothered* in powdered sugar that they served as a side instead of a dessert. Your arteries are thanking you as you're reading this.

Boiled peanuts suck. I never tried the peanut soup. We used to eat the peanuts raw all the time, picking the leftovers from harvested fields before going in the woods. I still prefer them roasted and salted. Go to Hubs in Sedley. They're good, cheap, and fresh there.
I knew a guy who was a pork inspector in the area, and after hearing his stories, I won't eat pork anymore. Too much knowledge can be bad for you!

Or, skipvia, as they spell it in so many places in the South, boiled p-nuts. :)
