The terrible towel became a thing during the 1970's when sportscaster Myron Cope talked about the Steeler fans waving towels in the stands during games. Since then, Terrible Towels have been made in the team's black and gold colors and you see tens of thousands of them at Steeler games. Fan twirl them in circles over their heads.
