what about national anthems?

Excellent. I won't list multiple ones, for the same reason I'm just putting one Christmas carol on the list. Since I'm American, I'll use our anthem in the most smug and nationalistic way I know how.

Amazing Grace. I actually heard this happen just yesterday, since there's a movie coming out with that title, and they play the song ENDLESSLY in the trailer.
Also, whenever someone launches into "Baby Got Back," it seems like someone within earshot knows the rest of the words after the first line, and starts singing it. That probably doesn't count for the purposes of this list... But wouldn't it be cool if it did? ;)

I meant to exclude hymns, since there are so many and that's one of the few occasions where groups of non-singing people sing in unison regularly... but seeing how "Amazing Grace" in particular is sung in so many other contexts, I'll make an exception.
"Baby Got Back," on the other hand, is right out. (Though come to think of it, I've noticed that phenomenon too. Odd.)
I'm also looking for a good popular drinking song to add to the list, but I don't know any. Any Irish in our midst?

You're right, you did exclude hymns. Though, I agree an exception could be made for this one. I'm not sure most people think of it as solely a hymn, since it's sung on protest marches as well. Hey! We Shall Overcome? Or ... I guess that's also a hymn.
"In heaven there is no beer, that's why we drink it here, and when we go to heaven, our friends will be drinking all the beer."
"Ninety-nine bottles of beer on the wall, ninety-nine bottles of beeeeeer..."
When people say "drinking songs," I automatically think of the SNL sketch of many years ago where they were advertising an Irish drinking songs CD, and one of the songs went like this: "We'll drink and drink and drink and drink and drink and drink and drink! AND WE'LL fight and fight and fight and fight and fight and fight and fight!"

I'm tempted to add "We Shall Overcome," but I still need some convincing. I did use "99 Bottles" though.

"Baby Got Back" is callipygian in theme. I suspect that's why everyone knows it. How many songs are about big butts?
Wait. How many songs *are* about big butts...?

It's Black History Month. That's a good reason to add "We Shall Overcome."
Damn, there are lots of J.P. Sousa songs that everyone knows, but they have no lyrics. Does that count, O Mighty Listmaker and Soon-to-Be Older Person?

Dang, a title like that makes my birthday complete! What more could I ask for? :-)
The instrumental songs thing is a good point, I knows tons of people who will explode into "Stars and Stripes Forever," "Pomp and Circumstance," or "Wedding Processional." And as great as those songs are, I can't in good conscience call BUM BUM BADUM-PUM BIMBIMBIMBIMBIM BOOM "singing." Sometimes it's downright tragic.
Good call on the Black History Month though. I shall add the song out of sheer guilt.

Okay, well maybe not BUM BUM BADUM-PUM BIMBIMBIMBIMBIM BOOM, but how about DAAAAA DA DA DAAAAH DAAAAAAAAH DAAAAAAAAAA? Come on, it's catchy!
Yep, I was working the guilt angle. What can I say? Works every time. Or most of the time, anyway. O Mighty Listmaker and Soon-to-Be Older Person.
Okay, okay. Too much.

How about songs that people whistle along to? I'm thinking of the song whistled in The Parent Trap, The Bridge Over the River Kwai, Spaceballs, etc. You know: "DOO-do, do-doo-doo-DOO-DOO-do; DOO-do, do-doo-doo-DOO-DOO-do..."
I googled it: "Colonel Bogey March"

Now that one is catchy. But it definitely falls in the "not really singing" category along with "PMPH CHICKA PMPH CHH PM PM CHICKA PMPH" and the rest.
Question: aren't we all soon to be older? Every second that passes, we age. And the leading cause of death is life. Depressing. But birthdays are good! And mine begins in... just under... 4 hours. In this time zone.
In case you were wondering, the quote above may very well be the first time beatboxing has ever been transcribed as text. Thank you all for joining me for this monumental event.

Well, sure we're all getting older. But you get to go first, see. (And that sentence, see, is going to be outdated in about...well, 1 1/2 hours, if you're here. But you're not.)
PMPH CHICKA PMPH CHH PM PM CHICKA PMPH? Please. It's BMPH CHICKA BMPH CHH BM BM CHICKA BMPH. You guys sure talk funny there.

"In heaven there is no beer, that's why we drink it here...."
(It's fun to listen to old bachelor farmers sing it in the taverns during Czech Days.)
