This is in fact the verb 'to cry' from Gaelige (Irish national languauge). pronounced: Quee-nu (there are other pronunciations depending on what part of Ireland you are in).
I believe there is an English variant "Keening", a form of vocal lament associated with mourning that is traditional in Scotland and Ireland.
