kujakupoet commented on the word Sallee
Sallee is the old name for Salé, is commonly used in phrases such as 'Sallee rovers,' which appear in folk songs and histories. The more formal version of the adjective is Salletine. The surname 'Sallee' derives from this usage. The OED would have us believe that a sallee is a kind of acacia.

I'm stunned that I can't find 'Salletine' here or anywhere. Not even OED! I have often read this word in historical references oftoNorth Africa; Salletine is the adjective for things having to do with the Republic of Salé and its subjects. Given that the city of Salé still exists today, what are its people called if not Salletines?
