  • "As for twit-twat, an alternative name for the common house sparrow, that compound is not likely related to any of these twats or twits. Instead twit-twat is a shortened form of twittle-twattle, which arose as a variant of tittle-tattle, which arose as a reduplicated form of tattle, meaning to chatter."

  • Now this--*this* is a Wordie list.

    March 31, 2014

  • Oh, and ru, those aren't the gas vans they're referring to in these cards. They were meant for protection from gas attacks. I found the description written on that particular card (although not the image): "MOBILE GAS VANS. Home Office mobile gas vans, two of which are illustrated, are used for the testing of respirators and for the purpose of training men and women under the conditions of an actual gas attack. The vans are so built that a gas cloud can be put up in the body of the van; the white canopies at the back are airlocks to prevent the escape of the gas when the door of the van itself is opened. The picture shows a group undergoing training at Hendon Police College; the respirator in use is the Service type, which is described on Card No. 31. (No.38)"

  • I wish you all could see the cigarette cards themselves--I think the link I posted long ago is broken, but I'll try to find them again. Rubber clothing indeed. =:-O

    March 31, 2014

  • Thanks, ry! Great suggestions. :-)

    March 31, 2014

  • Nickname for the Spruce Grouse. When approached by a predator, it relies on camouflage and stillness to stay hidden, often allowing people to approach within a few feet before exploding into flight. The behavior earned it the nickname "fool hen." Clearly, it's not the fool in that particular situation. ;-)

    November 30, 2013

  • Somehow not surprised. Thanks, bilby--hope you've been well!

    October 30, 2013

  • I *think* that's already listed, g, but I can't tell because my list won't show entirely. :-\ Thanks, though!

    October 28, 2013

  • Thanks, glypheme! You're correct on both counts!

    October 20, 2013

  • Thanks, bilby, for promoting my list. :-)

    September 2, 2013

  • Hi claire1215--thanks! I have no idea why, but it looks as though postprandial, one of my all-time favorites, is not on this list! Fixing that in a second. And preantepenultimate is definitely a "p" category in my book. :-)

  • Thanks, r! Nope, no clue what the word was. I didn't even realize I was that close!

    September 14, 2012

  • Thanks, kalayzich; I've added it. I'm still working on this list, so some names are not yet here.

  • Come to think of it, that's another list idea....

    August 30, 2012

  • :-D

    August 30, 2012

  • Hi, Bonvivant. Darkwing and Rockin' Robin are already on this list, so no worries. I'll add Little Red Rooster if you'll post your comment on the word page for it. :-)

Kalayzich: Do you mean Kehaar (Watership Down)? If so, it's on the list. I'll add the Harry Potter birds as well. The two Potters that I know have actual names are Hawkes (phoenix) and Hermes. If you can think of any others, let me know. Thanks!

    August 30, 2012

  • At least it's not shortened to "Names for the Third Stomach of a Ruzu..." ;->

    August 30, 2012

  • Hi goodkitten. Hmm...don't know about ackee. If it's poisonous, wouldn't it be just as bad as it sounds? :-)

    August 30, 2012

  • Hi, kalayzich. Thanks. There are several variants for many of the words on this list, for rather obvious reasons. I've added qin as one of them.

    August 30, 2012

  • Sorry, ru--didn't mean for you to feel as though you were talking to yourself. I'm adding your addiction to the list to give it that special Latvian flair. The joke may be on you, but at least we can read about it. ;-)

    August 30, 2012

  • Thanks, iaiasianeyes!

    August 30, 2012

  • Thanks, marky--it's still growing!

    August 30, 2012

  • Good idea, bilby--I'll have to work on that. (Sorry for this extremely late response.)

    August 30, 2012

  • Thanks for the interesting article, ruzuzu--and sorry for the late reply!

    August 30, 2012

  • Holy cow, this profile page is even more confusing than it was when we were segregated.

Yes, yes! Irish Potato Candy! I just saw your comment on the other page. Congratulations on your initiation. They're good, but they'd be better without that nasty coconut, if you ask me. :-)

    March 22, 2012

  • Facebook is so dull without you. :-)

    March 22, 2012

  • Wait. Neither of you has ever heard of Irish Potato Candy before now? *stunned*

    March 22, 2012

  • Why, that's just ducky! And to answer your earlier question: Yes, distelfinks are fictitious. At least I hope they are.

Now if you'll all excuse me, I need a nap.

    March 14, 2012

  • I think it a cruel joke that this week ends in turning back one's clock and losing an hour of sleep. From whom should I take umbrage?

    March 10, 2012

  • From Mental Floss: "Without a Presidential election preceding it, this is kind of a lame duck holiday. Though the holiday was created to celebrate the introduction of the 20th Amendment in 1933, the amendment was actually ratified in January of that year. Lame duck day is more of a way to honor those who just left office after being rendered totally ineffective for a few months. In other words, it is appropriately lame."

  • You're absolutely correct. Tsunamis added.

    To the list, I mean.

    February 10, 2012

  • Surely you've seen the squid list, ruzuzu?

    January 14, 2012

  • Hi, deinonychus. I've been away for a few months but I'm slowly crawling back. Don't worry about making a list that overlaps someone else's--that's the beauty of being able to make your own list. Welcome. :-)

    January 14, 2012

  • Nifty list! (Feel free to yoink any time.)

    January 14, 2012

  • You're welcome, spine face.

    January 14, 2012

  • Ooh, fufluns and tea! How lovely! And hearts too! Well, I certainly heart you back, r. Thanks for the love. :-)

    January 14, 2012

  • Hi everyone. :-)

    January 10, 2012

  • Aww, shucks. You're awfully nifty yourself. :-)

    January 4, 2012

  • No, but I have dealie, dealie-bob, dealy, dealybob, deeley, and deelie. *takes deep breath*

I wasn't aware that dealybopper is a placeholder. I always thought it referred only to those weird glittery balls we stuck on headbands in the 1970s. ;-)

    January 4, 2012

  • You bet. Glad you found it. :-)

    January 4, 2012

  • Thanks, Ikiser! I'll add them forthwith.

    January 4, 2012

  • Yeah, lame.

    December 26, 2011

  • Hernesheir, I've checked the privacy settings and all seems in order. Apparently, I'm not the only one having such trouble. See ruzuzu's comment about http://support.wordnik.com/wordnik/topics/seeing_other_peoples_lists (and the workaround).

    December 8, 2011

  • Yarb! You're making me want to break down and sob desperately myself! Thank the gods it's only a dream.

    ...isn't it, ruzuzu? *worries*

    December 8, 2011

  • Thanks, ruzuzu! I have to remind myself to keep checking for glitches on the support site. :-)

    December 8, 2011

  • It's a plane.

    December 8, 2011

  • Hi Carmaella. I'm seeing a list of my lists on the right side of my profile page, with the list names in hypertext. That should get you where you want to go. Does that not work on your screen?

    December 8, 2011

  • Dongle added! H, fossple is already listed. :-)

    December 7, 2011

    December 7, 2011

  • We have it on good authority.

    December 6, 2011

  • It may just be the spelling. I ran across so many variously spelled words that I'm not sure I captured them all here. But I'll add it, just to be sure. :-)

  • *hands sionnach a flaky umbrage pastry*

    September 18, 2011

  • Hi all. Rolig, my sentiments match yours. I'm willing to wait out the Big Tangle if it means that I'll be able to stay in contact with my good old Wordnikian friends, especially since many are not on FB or other such sites. But I've lost my enthusiasm for Wordnik. I'm hoping it's temporary, because I still don’t believe there’s another site where you can blather on happily with like-minded word lovers who are so funny, civil, and intelligent. Wouldn’t it be great if we could have that back again? And I miss my lists, and everyone else’s lists, and flinging fufluns. I’m still around, but I’m waiting. In the meantime, I hope to see all of you elsewhere. *sigh*

    September 17, 2011

  • I haven't been here in a while either--can't get the pages to load before a millennium passes. (Also in the Beating a Dead Horse Dept.)

    September 4, 2011

  • Well, if you're going to judder them around, Chained....I mean, really.

    August 29, 2011

  • I only take them out of the china cabinet for special occasions.

    August 29, 2011

  • Yes, I was disappointed that way as well. ;-)

    August 29, 2011

  • Right here.

  • What? Umbrage!

    *flees*

    August 24, 2011

  • Hey! Stop looking at Chained's citations!

    Oh, wait.

    August 24, 2011

  • However, it is still not a valid Scrabble word.

    August 24, 2011

  • Here it is.

    August 20, 2011

  • This sounds quite painful.

    August 20, 2011

  • I can only answer your question with a question: How do you catch a cloud and pin it down?

    August 20, 2011

  • *hands out glowing green fufluns as a distraction*

    *snarfs up umbrage*

    *flees*

    August 20, 2011

  • Bilby, that is exquisite.

    August 20, 2011

  • *groan*

    August 20, 2011

  • What are they sitting around for? Look at all those sacks that need delivering!

    August 16, 2011

  • Not to worry--plenty more ideas where that came from. ;-)

    August 16, 2011

  • Ruzuzu? Wrong nun.

    August 16, 2011

  • Neat! I just found out that it's also used in Tasmania as a name for the Eastern Spinebill.

    August 16, 2011

  • What if Sr. Bertrille renunciated her nunhood before becoming a ninja?

    August 16, 2011

  • *hides Umbrage Sweeper*

    August 16, 2011

  • Oh, you'd think so, wouldn't you, asylumhead? Fortunately, I always travel with my Super 2000 Umbrage Sweeper.

    *sweeps up umbrage*

    *flees*

    August 15, 2011

  • I must confess that the long page load time is what's been keeping me away for a while. It is frustrating.

    August 15, 2011

  • *swipe*

    A-ha! I have it!

    *flees*

    August 8, 2011

  • Give it back, you umbrage thief!

    August 8, 2011

  • *catches fuflun, now stale, and eats it anyway*

    August 8, 2011

  • They've all been eaten.

    August 8, 2011

  • I like the dated comments too. Thanks for adding that.

    July 31, 2011

  • You beat me to this page--another record! :-)

    July 29, 2011

  • See ruzuzu's comment on her Mold list.

    July 29, 2011

  • Well now, I think that's a first--making a list that you yourself have already created. I think this needs to be added to the Several Stages of Wordie Addiction list.

    July 29, 2011

  • Be careful. I don't think Wordnik has a resident dentist.

    July 29, 2011

  • Weirdnet again....

This is how my dad says "coleslaw"--as though using the entire word is just too exacting. Likewise, hot dogs are simply "dogs."

    July 29, 2011

  • Love it! :-)

    July 29, 2011

  • *facepalm*

    July 28, 2011

  • Can you break your teeth on those too?

    July 28, 2011

  • Aaaaahahaha! Why haven't I seen this list before now? Favorited!

Do these international fufluns come with grape riffles?

    July 26, 2011

  • Holy cow.

    July 25, 2011

  • Wait'll you try the fufluns topped with whipped umbrage.
