The genus is one of many chats moved from the thrush family to the flycatchers. All alethe are African species: the Brown-Chested, Red-Throated, Cholo or Thyolo, White-Chested, and Fire-Crested. Recently, a hidden forest in Mozambique, discovered via Google Earth, proved to be an important area for the endangered Thyolo Alethe.
