In heraldry, descriptive of an erect open hand, palm forward. This position is assumed unless otherwise indicated. Unless specified as sinister as in the example below, the right hand is assumed.
Purpure, a sinister hand couped and erect argent -- MANLEY. This blazoning indicates a purple shield bearing a silver left hand (cut off at the wrist) that is erect with palm forward. I have a friend named Manley in Florida who is hopelessly left-handed. He will get a kick out of this.
