Thanks, bilby! I knew this word as meaning a kind of barnacle, but hadn't realized that the genus Balanus derives from Greek βάλανος for acorn. Barnacles are also called acorn shells and sea acorns.

No, it's not a plantar wart as they are associated with the sole of your feet. This is definitely toe related...you know, associated with certain conditions of the toe.

Bilby, you should avoid dictionaries that give you balanism. You might prefer balanic, which gives another thrust to the acorn theme.
