A duck. Also calloo, calaw. Jamieson's Scottish Dictionary asserts this as a name for the pintail duck, but other sources state it as the name of the long-tailed duck also known as oldwife or oldsquaw. Jamieson also gives "coal and candle light" as an Orkney name for this bird, based upon the sound of its call.

FYI, oldsquaw is no longer used in ornithology because "squaw" is considered pejorative. :-)
