At first I wondered if it was an 18th-C spelling used for period colour - like Jane Austen uses 'chuse' for 'choose' - but there were lots of other typos, like 'a might puzzled' instead of 'a mite puzzled', so I guess it just hadn't been copy-edited very thoroughly.
