Interesting. How is this pronounced? I suspect my first inclination--de MID i ate--is not correct given the apparent etymology.

Verbophile, I've seen this word spelled dimidiate. Are there two spellings, do you know?

pavonine commented on the word demidiate
It's spelled both ways. See OED 2

mollusque commented on the word demidiate
OED2 does have a cross-reference from "demidiate" to "dimidiate", but the entry for "dimidiate" does not mention an alternate spelling. One of the quotations shows the spelling "dimediate", but none show "demidiate". A full text search of OED online shows that "demidiate" does not occur there, and the cross-reference to "dimidiate" has been removed.

Thanks, Verbophile.

Sorry, I tagged prematurely. I removed the "misspelling" tag and replaced it with a "dord" tag. Congratulations Verbophile on finding a mistake in the OED.
