  • A kind of gas mask used in coal mines. In Miracle at Springhill, Leonard Lerner, 1960, the name is said to have originated in Nova Scotia and to be "derived from that of a German scientist, Alexander Bernhard Draeger, who invented a type of special equipment for breathing in a mine choked with gas."
