  • noun In dyeing, a bath used in mordanting, composed of water in which a small proportion of cows' or pigs' dung, or some substitute for it, has been dissolved, with a certain amount of chalk to remove the acetic acid from the printed material. See dunging.

  • I don't have a suitable list to put this on, but it's far too interesting a term not to share it with others. According to the Oxford English Dictionary: "In dyeing, a mixture of dung, usually that of cows, with chalk in warm water, used to remove superfluous mordant from printed calico. cf. dung-cistern, dung-copper, a vessel containing a dung-bath."

    I think, also, that there ought to be a rock band called superfluous mordant.
