sionnach commented on the word dungavenhooter
an alligator-like reptile, mouthless but with abnormally large nostrils, common to the logging regions. "Concealing itself with Satanic cunning behind a whiffle bush, the Dungavenhooter awaits the passing logger. On coming within reach of the dreadful tail, the victim is knocked senseless and then pounded steadily until he becomes entirely gaseous, whereat he is greedily inhaled through the wide nostrils. Rum-sodden prey is sought with especial eagerness."
I have my doubts about this one, as it appears only in the Wordcraft archives (october 2002) - all google appearances trace back to this single occurrence.

How could any creature like this not have a mouth? If you "inhale" food through your nostrils, aren't your nostrils then also a mouth?
*starts thinking about weird marine creatures*

I guess not, if you have pounded your food into a "gaseous" state first, before inhaling it. I think one has to hold the line on defining "mouth" as any orifice through which nutrients can be ingested, if only because of the existence of enemas, suppositories and the like.

I'm not sure about pounding nutrients into a gaseous state, though. That just seems unlikely in so many ways.
Then your lungs would also be like a stomach, which is also freaky.

But if it's a madeupical beast, it can do damn near anything. :-)
