From German Hermelin ("ermine"), from Middle High German hermelin, from Old High German harmilī, harmilīn ("weasel"), diminutive of Old High German harmo ("ermine, stoat, weasel"), from Proto-Germanic *harmô (“weasel”). Cognate with Italian ermellino ("ermine"), from the same Germanic source. More at ermine.
