An open rowboat with two pairs of oars, commonly found in most boat-building communities in western and northern Scandinavia. The word faering comes from the Norse word færing, literally meaning "four-ing," and it refers to the number of oars on the boat. The faering has a long history in western Scandinavia. The smaller boats found with the 9th-century Gokstad ship resemble boats still in use in parts of Norway.
