I tend to think of this word as a verb, backformed from gondolier:
"Now that he lives in Venice, Luigi gondles on the Grand Canal on a regular basis".

I tend to think of it as Wrong. Whaever gondles are, everyone feels the gondolier connection, first and foremost too.

Gondle has reminded me of a lovely incident that happened to me in Venice in the early nineties. Having wandered Venice and wanting to take a gondola trip and having noticed that on the water gondolas seemed to be backed up bow to stern in convoys we decided to investigate when off-peak might be.
On returning to our (rather posh) hotel I asked the (inscrutable) concierge when would be the best time to take a gondola. Peering up at me sagely over his half-moon spectacles, and without batting an eyelid, he murmured 'The best time for sir to take a gondola is when sir is feeling romantic'.
