Might be a local usage up here in the north. Heard it twice today.

"A helmet won't protect you very well in a bingle with a car. Also, motorists give more room when passing a cyclist without a helmet (according to research). Helmets are far more useful for gumby cyclists who ride on the footpath and take a tumble because the footpath is dodgy.
