In west-central Mexico in the 1970's I met an ancient bed-ridden woman named Urraca (local common name for a corvid resembling the boat-tailed grackle) whose huaraches hadn't been removed from her feet for years. The dry calloused skin of her feet had grown around the leather so that it was probably impossible to remove the sandals without a carpet-knife. Couple that with toenails that hadn't been clipped in years, and well, you get the picture...
