Refer also lazaretto and notes at Online Etymology Dictionary, "... from the Biblical proper name Lazarus (Luke xvi.20), which was extended in medieval usage to 'any poor and visibly diseased person' (cf. Eng. lazar, 1340, 'one deformed and nauseous with filthy and pestilential diseases' Johnson)."
