Why the hostility, folks? For that matter, why the spam tag? I've seen only one posting of this word, and doesn't 'spam' imply multiple, unsolicited postings? Whatever happened to freedom of expression? Not to mention civility. Or am I missing something?

I don't think it is spam, it's just a bit confusing. We all know what meta means, and we all know what photography means, but what exactly they mean when put together is not clear. For example, metaphysics is almost completely different from physics. One is about the universe, and the other is about the mind.

Not sure what's going on here, metaphotography. This is usually a welcoming group. Your first comment as a wordie might go against the grain for some, since Wordie is supposed to be "Like Flickr, but without the photos". Others have posted photographs, but usually for humorous effect. We usually link to illustrative photographs. I also recall seeing criticism of the particular photograph you posted, but perhaps not on Wordie. Why is it metaphotography rather than photography?

As for the definition, I learned something from it. I'm most familiar with the third meaning of "meta" (e.g., metanalysis). I hadn't realized it had so many shades of meaning.

Metaphotography, there's nothing wrong with your comment/posting in my view. Don't feel bad or delete anything--I think some folks just may have misinterpreted your posting a definition of your username. However, I am a little confused, because it didn't seem to actually define "metaphotography" at all. What do you mean by a higher order of photography? And how does the image you posted illustrate that? (I assume it was meant to.)

Yes, please stick around. Sorry I was a bit snarky yesterday. I don't mind a little self-promotion, lord knows I'm often guilty of it. I was just making a cheap crack about Wordies generally knowing lots of words :-)

I think some of us (myself included) may have been reacting as much to the very obvious spam from ridesearch earlier the same day as we were to metaphotography's post. When your username is the name of your first post and your website, the tendency is to dismiss the post as spam even though it may not be.

I'd echo the apologies from other Wordies, but I think assuming your post was spam was an easy mistake to make given that you never defined metaphotography or explained your image.

I'd look forward to more information about your topic, and perhaps some links to examples.

Ok... An interesting segment from INTERTWINING THE TWO CULTURES IN THE YEAR TWO THOUSAND by Ken Stage :

Metaphotography And The Appropriation Studio. One of the major causes of the

turn of the century movement away from realist painting was the invention and refinement

of photography, which was seen as 'appropriating' the painter's mandate. Ironically, the

computer is now mating the compositional aspect of painting with photography, and

image 'appropriation' has become central to this hybrid art form. Images can be 'captured'

with many different traps: on film by conventional camera; on disk by digital camera; on

computer by scanning hardcopy images, getting input from video, or by downloading from

the Internet. No matter how the image is captured, it can be processed, developed, by a computer in all the ways a photographic image can (as well as in many, many more totally

new ways) in a virtual dark room—and again with the cost in time and materials

minuscule compared to that of pre-computer days. Image enhancement algorithms such as

false colour, edge detection, and sharpening, originally developed by mathematicians and

scientists as research tools, are now as familiar to the computer artist as they are to the

scientist. The extent of this image processing power is perhaps most dramatically

illustrated in software that will take a photographic image and modify it to look like an

impressionist painting or a line drawing or a watercolour—or even 'Van Gogh' it!
