Monolingualism is Curable!
So said the cheery sticker on the door of the Language Faculty staffroom where I did my teaching practice.
Having said that, I came a cropper by awarding a Language Merit certificate at the school assembly to a girl I announced as Christina Bulung Abis for a paper she wrote. It turned out her name was Christina, and she had been trying to write 'belum habis' (in Indonesian, 'not finished') as a note to me at the top of the page. But her spelling ... oh cruel attestation to my pedagogical success!
